FAQ
How long will I be in counseling?
The amount of time you spend in counseling is very much your decision. You may choose to come in for only a few sessions to get your concerns off your chest or you may choose to continue for the long-term to work through deeply seated issues that have been causing you problems and interfering with your life.
How often will you and I meet for session?
My preference is for us to meet weekly or bi-weekly. This allows for consistency and to gain as much ground on your concerns as possible.
What do you charge?
50-Minute Therapy Session: $200
90-Minute Therapy Session: $300
HRT & Surgery Letter Evaluation Sessions (50-min): $300
Do you provide hormone letters for transgender clients? How much does this cost?
Yes, absolutely! This is my specialty! Many clients who are embarking on gender transition are not necessarily seeking counseling, rather are simply going through the necessary steps to acquire a hormone letter to present to their doctor to begin the journey of a chemical transition. For these clients I spend anywhere from a couple of sessions doing a thorough evaluation and exploration of your gender from birth to the present. We also discuss your mental health history and your current mental health. Following the final session, I write a comprehensive report with recommendations for your other treating practitioners (i.e. therapists, doctors, surgeons) and send them directly to those involved in your care.
The cost of each evaluation session is $300 as the writing of the report is rather extensive and requires a great deal of time out of session to complete.
At the end of your evaluation, we will have explored your gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexuality, and a variety of other topics in great detail and you will leave feeling more confident in your decision to proceed or not to proceed with transition.
Please note that 2 sessions is the average length of time to complete an evaluation, though there will be some clients who require a greater number of sessions in order to thoroughly explore this aspect of their lives.
Do you take insurance?
No I do not. The majority of insurances require that I diagnose you with a mental disorder in order for counseling to be covered, a label that sticks with you for life and may affect you in unanticipated ways in the future. Ask your insurance company if they provide out-of-network reimbursement for mental health care. If they do, inquire about the percentage they cover and how to submit your claim.
If your insurance reimburses for out-of-network mental health counseling, this is how it works. You pay the counseling feel out of pocket at the time of your appointment. I provide you with the appropriate documentation of our sessions to submit to your insurance. Then, your insurance reimburses you a percentage of the session feel that you paid out of pocket. Some insurance companies reimburse up to 80%, so it's worth asking about that coverage.
Do you offer online counseling?
Yes, for Tennessee residents only. All sessions are online only as I reside in Southern California.
Is online counseling confidential?
I hold online sessions on Psychology Today's online counseling service called SESSIONS. SESSIONS is a HIPAA compliant and encrypted online counseling site. It is, however, up to you to ensure your location is a private place to obtain counseling.
